Backgammon game is almost 5,000 years old and may have originated in Mesopotamia in the Persian Empire or as in the present day Iran, Iraq, and Syria and in time it was played by the Egyptians, Sumerians, Romans, and Persians. It is a game for two players. To decide who will start the game each player throws a single die until they roll different numbers. The player throwing the higher number gets a chance to start the game first. Backgammon game board has a unique arrangement, but when you get the idea, it is very easy. Each player has fifteen pieces and the objective of backgammon is to move all fifteen checkers off the board.
Backgammon (“tavla” in Turkish), is a very popular game in Turkey, played in local cafes, in front of shops, parks and even on streets. It is mostly played by men, but in Modern times many women play backgammon too. It adds fun to make a bet before starting the game and the loser buys the drinks. Sitting in a cafe, drinking coffee or smoking hookah and playing tavla is a great way to experience Turkish culture!
