Turkish coffee is a strong black coffee that Turks drink in small cups with sugar or without sugar. Turks cook it in copper “cezve” which has a wide bottom but a narrow neck with a long handle. Turkish coffee cup is called “fincan” in Turkey and it is very small and similar to espresso cup. Turkish people believe that having one cup of coffee together guarantees at least forty years of friendship.
When you are in Turkey you can order your coffee as black, medium or sweet. Black coffee is without sugar, medium one has little sugar, sweet one has plenty sugar in it. No milk is used in this coffee. Before sipping your coffee, wait about a minute for the coffee grounds to settle to the bottom of the cup and stop sipping when you taste the grounds coming through your mouth. And when you are finished and if you are lucky to find the right person, you may turn the cup upside down on the saucer and wait almost 15 minutes and learn about your future by someone who can read the coffee grounds remaining in the cup. Reading the future from the coffee grounds left in the cup is a popular social activity much enjoyed by groups of women in Turkey for fun and excitement.
