Folk dance has developed without a choreographer and it reflects the traditional life of the common people of a country or region and they reflect the cultural structure of each region. In Turkey folk dances in different regions and locations have different characteristics. Turkey has seven different geographical regions and each region has its characteristic dance with particular costumes, steps, rhythms and also instruments. The hora in Thrace, spoon dances in and around Konya, the halay in the East and Southeast, the horon in the Black Sea etc. It is a cultural treasure with very rich figures in Turkey.
You can enjoy watching folk dances of Turkey at weddings, engagement ceremonies, national and religious festivals, when sending young men off to perform their military service and in many other traditional activities. Some folk dances require partner, but some dances are line or circle dances which do not require partners.
Each Turkish folk dance groups chose a special costume for themselves in different regions and they wear it during their show. Costumes are very rich in color and look very traditional. Shoes should be comfortable enough to allow dancer easy freedom of movement.
