Last winter I was in Istanbul only for one day. I was feeling so tired and just wanted to relax and experienced new atmosphere. I thought that the best way would be catching a ferry for Bosphorus tour and took the short (1 1/2 hour) boat tour of the Bosphorus.
It was just lovely and the best part is that there were only a few people on the ferry. I think because of cold in winter not many people join Bosphorus tour.
If you do tour in summer go there early to find a nice place to stand along the outside railing for a marvellous view and sit on the same side on the way back to see both the European and Asian sides. When I did it the sun was a little bit shining and even though it was cool I spent some time on the outside deck taking photos. Bosphorus tour is a nice way to see Istanbul, especially if you have limited time in the city like I had. I was able to see sites by sailing that I was not able to visit on my one day trip, such as Dolmabahce Palace, the Maiden's Tower, the Fortress of Europe, and the Fortress of Asia, night clubs, spectacular villas that line the shores of the Bosphorus and also passed under the bridges together with oil tankers and other ships.
During trip seagulls were wheeling along just skimming the surface of the water and getting very close to me, wish that I had something to feed them. I took breathe deeply in fresh oxygenated air and felt cool fresh Bosphorus wind on my skin, drank a cup of Turkish tea and of course impressed by amazing view from a different perspective. Don’t forget to have your camera with you for photos of fantastic areas, old castles, palaces and priceless villas. I forgot mine but thanks to God had mobile phone with full battery.
Don't leave Istanbul without doing a Bosphorus tour for a different perspective of the large city. I highly recommend taking this trip up the Bosphorus but definitely bring a light sweater or coat even in the sun, the wind can pick up and you can get quite cool. It is a very nice change of pace from the city sights. It will be a trip that gives you many unforgettable memories of your time in Istanbul. You do not need a tour guide but definitely a good guidebook. The ferry leaves from and returns to Eminonu.
